Welcome to the website of South Australian poet, Ray Stuart.
Here you will find information about Ray and his writing, as well as a selection of his poetry.
To Fly Again is the Ray’s first collection. It tracks through diverse life experiences and showcases the many facets of Ray’s writing – from philosophical, to humorous, to realist. The title reflects wistfulness for the wonder of youth, when one believes anything is possible.
Ray's second collection of poetry ‘High Mountainous Country – No Reliable Information’ stems from his experiences and travels across Papua New Guinea as a young Army lieutenant serving with the Pacific Islands Regiment between 1961 and 1964.
The poetry is illustrated with the photography of Teunis Ritman, and maps of the period, which were often annotated in blank areas as ‘High Mountainous Country – No Reliable Information’, which in reflection was a good metaphor for PNG at that time, and for that matter for life in general – hence the title.
'High Mountainous Country' will appeal to those who have lived in PNG, and also to those readers who would like to gain a poetic impression of life in that country when it could well still attract the label of ‘the Last Unknown’.
